City of Antwerp

Internship @Studio Plankton

  • 3D Modeling

  • 3D Printing

For the Flanders Technology & Innovation Festival, we created a 3D-printed model of Antwerp's city center, featuring interactive animations triggered by RFID technology.

My main role involved modeling buildings for 3D printing, ensuring they met design limitations. I also assisted in assembling the installation and setting it up for the event at Sportpaleis.

Every red building had an innovative story to tell. For these stories to be explained, we made multiple animation videos that played automatically when you placed one of the buildings on a pedestal.

This was made possible thanks to an invisible RFID tag that we incorporated into the buildings and an RFID reader device that was built into the pedestal.

Models

By creating a physical model of the city center, we retained a playful element, allowing both young and old to interact with the various innovations. The project received much praise from the thousands of visitors.

Due to great success, the City decided to give the model a permanent place in tourist hotspot Het Steen. It can be admired in all its glory from mid-April 2024 onwards.
